a locally owned and run confectionary that offers the ultimate…chocolate and wine pairings.
With Valentine’s Day coming up, two of our favorite things came to mind…Wine and Chocolate! And there is the perfect place to purchase and experience both in Charlottesville. Gearhart’s Fine Chocolates is a locally owned and run confectionary that offers the ultimate…chocolate and wine pairings. We Inn girls had to check it out.
When you walk into Gearhart your senses are pleasantly overwhelmed. Not only can you smell the sweet scent of chocolate and baked goods, the kitchen is on display allowing shoppers to watch the “magic happen.” There are beautifully packaged goodies ready to take home. There is a cafe serving up espresso drinks and house made pastries. There is a counter full of hand made chocolates that you can pick and choose from. It is just…dreamy.
Our very knowledgeable guide Maureen started us in the back of house where chocolate was being stored, mixed, chilled and cut. Gearhart only uses the finest chocolate and local ingredients like their sweet cream, nuts and spices. Next we moved to the finishing room (the room on display) where chocolate was being tempered, shaped, covered in a waterfall of deliciousness and topped with flavor specific toppings. Some of which include a single kirsch soaked cherry, a tiny candied piece of lavender, a patterned sheet of cocoa butter…not your average “topping!”
We were then led into their private room where four chocolates sat next to four glasses of wine for each of us. Gearhart had done an amazing job pairing..professional and thought out. Seriously delicious! I have to admit, I wasn’t a true believer that specific wines would go with specific chocolates..I’m sold. Maybe it’s that the chocolates are just so good! Maybe it’s that they provided some local wines (like the King Family “7” Port) which we are suckers for. Whatever it is they are doing it right, we had a great time and I can’t wait to go back. www.gearhartschocolates.com
